Georgia -- A Warning?
By Ralf Fücks, Co-President of the Heinrich Böll Foundation
The war involving Georgia has changed the political landscape far beyond the Caucasus. In addition to its recognition of the separatist provinces, Russia is about to reinstate the principle of “limited sovereignty” for Georgia. And the West appears helpless: The United States is far away, its forces engaged elsewhere. And the European Union, although it has concluded a partnership agreement with Georgia, is not prepared for a geopolitical conflict.

South Caucasus: From Words to War
On the Escalation Between Georgia and South Ossetia, by Irakli Vacharadze, Tbilisi
The international community has to put pressure on Russian, the Georgian and South Ossetian parties to de-escalate the situation as soon as possible. Only this could avoid the recurrence of the bloody events of early 1990s in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
