Bosnian Women's Day on Capitol Hill
March 2009
The Bosniak-American Advisory Council for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BAACBH) in collaboration with the Congressional Caucus on Bosnia, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, the Heinrich Boell Stiftung, and the Advocacy Project, on March 10th, 2009 organized the Bosnian Women’s Day on Capitol Hill. The event was to celebrate the courage of women and emphasize the role of art in the process of multi-ethnic dialogue in a post-conflict society. It also signified that it is our responsibility to give a voice to the voiceless as well as to women who, despite ethnic cleansing and genocide, are rebuilding Bosnia and Herzegovina through art and their compassion for peace.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, member of the Congressional Caucus on Bosnia and representing the 30th Congressional District of Texas, was the keynote speaker along with Mrs. Munira Beba Hadzic, Executive Director of BosFam. The event guest speakers included Elmina Kulasic, BAACBH Executive Director; Dr. Bisera Turkovic, former BiH Ambassador to the U.S.; Mr. Sebastian Graefe, Program Director for Foreign and Security Policy and Transatlantic Issues at the Heinrich Boell Foundation; and Mr. Iain Guest, Executive Director of The Advocacy Project. At the event the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Quilt was displayed.
